How To Love Your Home

Home is where the heart is.

My husband and I are so lucky to have the home that we do. It’s an old 1800’s farm house, sits on just under 2 acres of land, and has a machine shed for all of my husband’s toys. It’s in the country yet close to town, so we don’t have far to drive for all our necessities. There’s plenty of room and storage, and it is in great shape structurally. It provides gorgeous views and plenty of space for us to enjoy.

Even with all of these wonderful benefits I find myself getting frustrated and down about it sometimes, because the inside could use some updating. LOTS of updating. When my husband first bought it there was old-lady decor everywhere. It was filled with fake flowers, pictures of geese, and other knick-knacks that just aren’t quite our style. Though we have done a lot of cosmetic work to make it feel more like our space, there’s still lots that I would like to do. Especially with shows like “Fixer Upper” and anything HGTV I often find myself wishing we could spend more time and money on our home.

How easy it is to forget how blessed we truly are.

In all honesty, I’d much rather be living in the home we are now than some brand-new totally updated home in a suburb somewhere. Not trying to bash that type of home or lifestyle either, different strokes for different folks! It’s just I know the type of home we have now is what we personally prefer. And I know a lot of people who would absolutely love to have a home like ours.

So how do we come to appreciate the space we live in? With Pinterest, HGTV, and our beloved friends and family posting on social media about all of the awesome updates in their homes it’s difficult not to get house-envy. It’s important to remember that you can only do so much with what resources you have. If you’re on a tight budget, then doing a major remodel likely isn’t plausible. And that’s ok! Creativity comes from the times when we have to work with what we’ve got, not always from when we have a plethora of options and money to throw.

Below are some of my favorite spots in our home that I have worked to make beautiful, cozy, and reflect the type of lifestyle we love along with some simple tips for creating a space you can love in your own home! I encourage you to find the beauty in your own home, mess and all, and learn to appreciate it. The mess tells a story, and the beauty is there. Your home doesn’t have to be Pinterest worthy to be a comfortable and lovely place.

Utilize some of that old stuff you didn’t think you wanted anymore to create a cozy spot.

Do some simple rearranging of different pieces already in your home. These are pieces I frequently use in different spots to change up the look without spending more money.

  1. This was a much needed read for me today. We are doing house projects right now and we are thanking God that we are able to pay for a house and update as well.

    1. Mihaela, I am so glad this post was helpful to you! We can’t have perfect homes, but we can have beautiful homes. Did you notice the messes in the background and the older ratty white loveseat that IS the dog’s? Haha, lots of love here though! Take care and thanks for stopping by!
